The Jewish Central Information Office was founded by Alfred Wiener, a German Jew who worked for the Central Association of German Citizens of Jewish Faith ( Centralverein deutscher Staatsbürger jüdischen Glaubens ). On 16 July 1871, B'nai B'rith, California Lodge, Number 163, located in San Francisco, received a charter of incorporation. When the original charter was destroyed by the Apr. 1906 San Francisco earthquake and fire, a replacement charter, with the earlier date, was issued to this lodge, on 24 May 1906.
